Krug Krug Series buyback

Krug brand history

Krug was founded by Joseph Krug in Reims in 1843 and is still managed by the Krug family (now the sixth generation). What makes the brand special is its complete "reserve wine philosophy": 120-250 blends are selected from base wines from different vineyards and vintages every year, and some of the base wines are aged for more than 15 years. Even NV's Grande Cuvée, each bottle is attached with an "Edition number" (such as 165ème Edition), which represents the independent batch identity of this bottle of wine. Krug is known as the "Rolls-Royce of the Champagne world" in the Champagne world.

Valuation highlights on this page

  • Krug first divided into Grande Cuvée, Vintage, Rosé, Clos du Mesnil, and Clos d'Ambonnay.
  • Clos single garden editions should look at the wooden box, bottleneck, back label and serial number. The year and preservation status are more important than the brand alone.
  • It can be organized together with Dom Pérignon, Salon, and Cristal in one batch to facilitate horizontal valuation using the year Champagne.

Krug collection logic

  1. Clos d'Ambonnay genus pinnacle: The annual output is about 3,000-8,000 bottles. It was first launched in 2002. It includes a gift box and is a rare product in the market.
  2. Clos du Mesnil is the core collection: First launched in 1979 (first sold in 1986), limited edition every year, including gift box, it is a regular collection according to market conditions.
  3. Grande Cuvée Edition Early Edition: Early editions (such as 158ème, 160ème early editions) are out of print, and even the full ID Code carries a significant premium.
  4. Vintage high-end vintage: Krug Vintage 1988, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2008 and other high-end vintages have stable appreciation.
  5. Krug Collection old version matured: A second sale of early Vintage (aged 20–30 years) with very small production and complete Maison certificates.

FAQ

What does the Edition number of Krug Grande Cuvée mean?

Since 2011, Krug has introduced an Edition numbering system (such as 165ème Edition) for NV Grande Cuvée, which represents the combined batch of the base wine of this bottle of wine. Each Edition is blended with 120–250 base wines, with limited production and is Krug’s exclusive identity.

Why is Clos du Mesnil so expensive?

It is Krug's single vineyard (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger village), single grape variety (Chardonnay), single vintage (Vintage) Champagne, with limited production and is only produced in the best years each year. The bottle is clearly labeled with the Clos name. A Clos du Mesnil of the same vintage is about 3–4 times the price of a standard Krug Vintage.

What is Krug Collection?

A part of the base wine from the early Vintage was left in the Krug cellar for secondary maturation (aging for 20–30 years) before being released again. Even the Maison certification is the key to the premium price.

Krug with Dom Pérignon?

Dom Pérignon is vintage-only and is known for an elegant style. Krug is led by non-vintage cuvées with vintage releases alongside them, giving a richer and more layered profile. Krug generally has lower circulation, so its buyback value can be slightly higher than a similarly priced Dom Pérignon.
