Emmanuel Courvoisier founded a wine-trading business in Paris in 1809, and the house moved to Jarnac, east of Cognac, in 1843 to begin Cognac production formally. In 1869, Napoleon III granted the house the honour of supplying the imperial court, helping earn Courvoisier the name 'The Brandy of Napoleon.' Its emblem is Napoleon's silhouette.
