Napoleon Cognac Knowledge Guide

The Napoleon Cognac grade is a grade between VSOP and XO in the BNIC classification. The youngest base wine must be legally aged for at least 6 years (new regulations in 2018). In fact, brands usually use 10-15 years of eaux-de-vie for blending. It is worth noting that the name "Napoleon" has two meanings in the Cognac industry: one is the BNIC legal classification; the other is the brand name (such as Courvoisier Napoleon, Martell Napoleon and other series of products).

Valuation highlights on this page

  • Napoleon can be Cognac grade, or it can be a brand or series name, which should be distinguished before valuing.
  • The old version of Napoleon should focus on the age, seal, fill level, carton and back label, and it is not advisable to estimate based on grade alone.
  • Rémy Martin, Martell, Courvoisier Napoleon can be compared in the same batch.

Extend the valuation route

If you have more than one bottle of wine, you can first group it by brand, level or year, and then use the following series pages to compare similar prices:

The history of the Napoleon level

The name "Napoleon" comes from the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in the 19th century. In 1811, a comet passed by, and the grape harvest was excellent that year. It was called the "Year of the Comet and Grapes." Emperor Napoleon had a special liking for this year's grape spirits, so Cognac named its mid-to-high-end aged wine "Napoleon" to commemorate it. Courvoisier was known as the "Wine of Napoleon" because it supplied relatives of Emperor Napoleon before World War II.

Napoleon vs VSOP vs XO

level Legally youngest base wine actual average age market positioning
VSOP ≥ 4 years 7–12 years Regular mid-range
Napoleon ≥ 6 years 10–15 years Mid- to high-end
XO ≥ 10 years 15–30 years High level routine

Courvoisier Napoleon still produced VS, VSOP, Napoleon, XO Imperial all lines
Martell Napoleon Discontinued 80-90s Cordon Bleu Napoleon, special Napoleon

Camus Napoleon still produced Golden Flower Napoleon, Borderies Napoleon

Discontinued Brand Napoleon Collection Logic

The Napoleon series of Martell and Rémy Martin have been discontinued for many years. The market circulation is getting less and less, and collectors are chasing the "out of print" attribute. The buyback market for the complete product, which includes the original red carton, pure English back label, and fill level reaching the shoulder, is increasing year by year. Although Courvoisier Napoleon is still in production, old gold medal versions from the 1970s and 1980s are equally valuable.

Napoleon collection suggestions

  • Martell/Rémy Martin Napoleon focuses on chasing the old version: Due to the discontinuation of the brand, the old version is out of print and scarce, and the buyback value is rising steadily.
  • Courvoisier Napoleon Imperial XO: As the flagship of "Wine of Napoleon", the collection demand of the old gold medal Napoleon and Imperial XO is stable.
  • A complete collection of Hong Kong editions from the 1980s: The Napoleon series (red carton, pure English back label, metal lid) that was circulated in the Hong Kong market at that time commanded a better premium for the entire batch.
  • Slight drops of liquid from the bottle are common: Napoleon is mostly old wine from the 1980s to 1990s. A slight drop of liquid within half a centimeter is normal aging, and the price is negotiated based on the drop (generally 8-15% deduction).

FAQ

What does Napoleon Cognac level mean?

Napoleon is a level between VSOP and XO in the BNIC Cognac classification. The minimum legal age of the base wine is 6 years (new regulations in 2018). It is also a brand name (such as Courvoisier Napoleon).

Martell Napoleon Is production tight?

The Martell Napoleon series has been discontinued for many years and is currently only available in the second-hand market. Cordon Bleu Napoleon, special Napoleon, etc. are out-of-print and rare items.

Courvoisier The most collectible version of Napoleon?

Courvoisier's gold medal Napoleon and Imperial XO from the 1970s and 1980s are hot searches; the modern L'Esprit Lalique crystal version is a high-end limited edition.

Will the entire batch of Napoleon wine be collected?

Yes. Whole batches of multi-brand Napoleon (Martell, Rémy Martin, Courvoisier, CAMUS, etc.) can be valued at one time, and the premium for the whole batch will be 8–15% higher than the individual bottles.

Is Napoleon 1 cm worth of liquid?

A slight drop of liquid (within half a centimeter) is normal aging of an old wine from the 1980s, with a value deduction of approximately 8–12%. 1 cm drop of liquid buckles 20–25%. No matter how serious the problem is, you should consider drinking clear water.
