The definition and threshold of XO aging wine

XO stands for Extra Old, meaning "Special Cognac", which is one of the higher levels of BNIC's legal classification. After the regulations were revised in 2018, the legal age of XO’s youngest base wine was increased from 6 years to 10 years. This change reflects the brand’s continuous improvement of XO-level quality. In fact, the XO of major Cognac houses is usually blended with 15-30-year-old eaux-de-vie, and some high-end limited editions are even more than 50 years old.

The birth and evolution of XO

In 1870, Maurice Hennessy, the third generation of the Hennessy family, created a specially aged Cognac for family and friends and marked the bottle 'Extra Old,' establishing the origin of the XO grade. Other Cognac houses subsequently introduced their own XO releases, eventually forming today's international classification. Before the 1980s, XO bottles often used long-neck metal caps and squat bottle shapes; designs became progressively more modern from the 1990s.

  • Base wine blending: Each bottle of XO is blended from 50-100 eaux-de-vie from different years, and the ratio is determined by daily tastings by the Cellar Master.
  • aging wooden barrels: New Limousin/Tronçais French oak barrels are used for the first aging; the second aging is transferred to old barrels to avoid excessive wood flavor.
  • Production area: High-end XO mostly uses base wine from Grande Champagne or Petite Champagne production areas. The soil has high chalky content, giving Cognac a delicate floral aroma.

XO = Extra Old, meaning "Special Chen Cognac". The legal minimum age for the base wine is 10 years (new regulations in 2018, originally 6 years). In fact, high-end XO is usually blended with base wines that are 15-30 years old or even longer.

XO is the and Hors d'ge / XXO?

Hors d'ge is a traditional usage, meaning "overage", and is mostly used for high-end aging above XO; XXO is a new classification in 2018, and the minimum base wine is legally 14 years old. Actual brand high-end series (such as Hennessy 8, Louis XIII) mostly call themselves XXO or Hors d'ge.

What is the price difference between XO and VSOP?
