The Origin of the VSOP Level

VSOP stands for Very Superior Old Pale, which is the level second only to XO and Napoleon in the Cognac grading system certified by BNIC (French Cognac Trade Association). The law stipulates that the youngest base wine of VSOP must be aged for at least 4 years, but in fact, major Cognac houses usually blend it with 7-12-year-old eaux-de-vie. The taste of VSOP is balanced, between the sharpness of VS (≥2 years) and the roundness of XO (≥10 years), making it a popular choice for daily drinking.

Where did VSOP come from?

The VSOP classification dates back to 1817. At that time, the British Prince of Wales (later King George IV) ordered a "Special Honor Grade" Cognac (Privilège) from the Hennessy family, marked "Very Superior Old Pale". This customized level later became the international standard for Cognac grading and is still in use today.
