Martell VSOP | Medallion Gold Label Discontinued Edition - Collector's Value

Martell VSOP is an entry-level cognac from the brand, but the 70s-80s "Medallion" gold label version, being long discontinued, is actually more valuable than the current edition. The 1970s Medallion was designed for Martell's 250th anniversary, featuring a round swift gold medallion emblem on the front of the bottle. Complete with its original box, it's a highly sought-after item among collectors.

Acquisition of Different Era Editions

  • 1970–1985 Gold Medallion VSOP: Features a golden circular swift emblem on the front of the bottle, an English-only back label, and a red cardboard box.
  • 1985–2000 Red Label Old Edition VSOP: Features a red horizontal label, a metal cap, and a back label with both Chinese and English.
  • Current VSOP Aged in Red Barrels: Features a red glossy label, promoted as aged in red barrels, a new design.
  • Festive/Limited Edition Collaborations: Occasionally released for Chinese New Year zodiac signs or regional exclusives, complete with original boxes, these command a significant premium.

Valuation Criteria

  1. Gold Medallion: The core identifier for the 70s-80s version. A complete medallion with a clear yellowish background can add 30–50% to the value.
  2. Back Label Era: English-only with no barcode = pre-1985; bilingual Chinese/English with barcode = post-2000.
  3. Original Cardboard Box: A complete red cardboard box with intact gold hot stamping adds approximately 15–20% to the value.
  4. Fill Level (Ullage): Between the neck and shoulder is normal; for older VSO Ps, liquid loss is common due to age, and the extent of loss will affect the price negotiation.

Authenticity Reference

Genuine Gold Medallion labels are made with metallic electroplating, and the background print has subtle halftone dots; fakes are often flat prints with no three-dimensional feel to the emblem. The swift logo on the bottom of a genuine bottle is deeply and clearly molded; fakes are often shallow and blurry. For the current Aged in Red Barrels edition, verify the position and font of the red barrel promotional label.

VSOP Acquisition Methods

The Gold Medallion is a highly prized old spirit. It is recommended to have it appraised together with its cardboard box. WhatsApp photos of the box + bottle + close-up of the gold medallion. After the appraiser confirms the age, a market price will be provided. For standard VSOP, simply photograph the front and back of the bottle. Payment can be made in cash or via FPS on site.
