Sunflower Moutai is a special version produced during the Cultural Revolution. It was named after the bottle label replaced the traditional Feitian fairy with a sunflower pattern. During the Cultural Revolution, "Feitian" was criticized as a symbol of feudal superstition, so the winery replaced it with the Sunflower design that symbolized revolution, creating the most politically charged series in the history of Moutai. Sunflower Moutai is very rare and is the top wine in the collection of old Moutai.
Year and batch are central to the appraisal. For Sunflower Moutai (1967-1975), send clear photos of the cap code, security label, capsule, fill level, bottle base and outer box. Include any certificate or accessories so everything can be assessed in one quote.
In 1966, the Cultural Revolution swept across the country. The traditional "Feitian" trademark of the Kweichow Moutai distillery was criticized by the Red Guards as one of the "four olds" because it involved the image of gods. The winery was forced to replace the Feitian fairy pattern with a sunflower - a symbol of "heart toward the red sun" - and launched the Sunflower version of Moutai. The Sunflower label design is simple and powerful, with a blooming sunflower in the center and the words "Kweichow Moutai" surrounding it.
Sunflower Moutai was mainly produced between 1967 and 1975. The output fluctuated greatly due to the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution. Distillery workers persisted in core processes such as traditional koji making, stacking, and fermentation under difficult circumstances, and the quality of the wine did not decline significantly due to political movements. Some wine industry historians believe that due to low production during this period, each batch received more sufficient cellaring time.
Sunflower Moutai is divided into two versions: "Large Sunflower" and "Small Sunflower". The former has a larger sunflower pattern and rougher printing, while the latter has a smaller pattern and more refined printing. Both are top-notch wines in the collection market.
The genuine Sunflower label is thicker and printed using letterpress printing technology, so it feels slightly uneven when touched. The imitations are mostly lithographically printed and the paper surface is too smooth.
During the Sunflower period, clay vases and early white porcelain bottles were mainly used; if milky white glass bottles appeared, the dating is questionable
The original sealing is tissue paper plus fire paint or early plastic sealing. Traces of secondary sealing are major warning signs.
When opening a bottle of wine that is over 50 years old, there should be a distinct aroma of aged sauce, accompanied by medicinal and woody aromas.
