In the broad scope of contemporary high-end alternative asset allocation, Guizhou Moutai Wine has long transcended its original attributes as a food and beverage, and has evolved into a "collectible wine" that has the functions of cultural totem, historical witness and financial value preservation. As a professional old wine buyer with many years of experience in Hong Kong,Chunxiang Wine Merchants I come into contact with countless rare wines every day. We have discovered that many collectors’ “old bottles” from decades ago that are stored in their wine cabinets are commanding considerable “new prices” in today’s secondary market.

In particular, the classic vintage series produced from the 1970s to the 1990s, such as the "Sunflower Standard" and "iron-cap" versions, have become the real focus of collectors and auction markets around the world due to their unique historical characteristics, scarce surviving quantity, and irreversible quality improvement during the aging process of baijiu. Today, Chunxiang Wine Merchants will dismantle the historical value, appraisal skills and market pricing logic of the classic old Moutai from the 1970s to the 1990s from the perspective of a professional Hong Kong old Moutai buyer, helping you to intelligently realize the marks of the times.

1. The historical legacy of the 1970s: Decryption of the version and value of Sunflower brand Moutai

The brand history of Moutai is a chapter deeply intertwined with the modern history of China. For Hong Kong's professional old wine buyback market, "Sunflower brand" is undoubtedly one of the most legendary symbols. In 1966, due to the special political environment in China, the original export "Feitian brand" trademark was suspended because it used the fairy pattern in Dunhuang murals and was considered to have feudal traditions. In order to comply with the contemporary context of "Sunflower blossoming toward the sun" at that time, the Kweichow Moutai distillery launched the "Sunflower brand" trademark exclusively for export in 1967.

Sunflower brand Moutai lasted for a very short time (about 1967 to 1975). This short-term and special cultural significance has established an unshakable high position in the old wine collection market. In professional identification and buyback, we subdivide it into three core versions:

1. Legend in the collecting world: Daye Sunflower (1967-1968)

"Daye Sunflower" existed for a very short time, and was only produced in small quantities from about 1967 to 1968. Its visual characteristics are the full Sunflower pattern, enlarged leaves, and the Chinese characters on the wine label are all in traditional Chinese, giving it a strong sense of handcrafting. Due to the failure to successfully register overseas, Daye Sunflower was once considered a "legendary" category by academic circles. It was not until 2012 that a 250-gram bottle of large-leaf Sunflower Moutai produced in 1967 was sold at auction for 575,000 yuan (equivalent to approximately 660,000 Hong Kong dollars), which officially confirmed its historical status and became the top of the Moutai collection pyramid.

2. The most popular model in the auction market: Small-Leaf Sunflower (1969-1975)

In order to facilitate export, Moutai subsequently changed to the trademark "Small-Leaf Sunflower". The Sunflower pattern is significantly smaller, the lines are slimmer, and the Chinese characters on the wine label have been changed from traditional Chinese to simplified Chinese. Although Small-Leaf Sunflower is a relatively common Sunflower brand on the market, its circulation is still extremely low. At Sotheby's auction in London in 2021, a box of extremely low-production 1974 Small-Leaf Sunflower Moutai was sold for a premium price of 1 million pounds (equivalent to approximately 9.7 million Hong Kong dollars), far exceeding expert estimates, proving its high recognition by international capital.

3. A cross-era mixed-race treasure: Three Revolutions Sunflower (1978)

After 1975, the export trademark Moutai was restored to the Feitian trademark. However, based on the principle of diligence and thrift, the winery used the remaining 258,000 Sunflower labels for domestic wine packaging in 1978. This creates a special combination of "three major revolutions: original label Sunflower and back label". This kind of mixed-race wine with special historical tension has a stable buyback value of more than 100,000 Hong Kong dollars in the Hong Kong market.

2. Craftsmanship innovation in the 1980s and 1990s: the rise and collection potential of iron-cap Moutai

Entering the mid-1980s, Moutai ushered in a major leap in packaging technology - the "iron-cap" era. Starting from December 1986, in order to effectively solve the problem of "wine running" (evaporation) of baijiu during long-term storage, the Kweichow Moutai distillery replaced the original plastic bottle caps with aluminum metal bottle caps.

Process advantages and identification points of iron-cap Moutai

The aluminum cover has higher physical strength, which can effectively prevent sealing failure caused by aging and brittleness of the plastic cover over time, and provides a stable internal environment for decades of aging. At the same time, the manufacturing of metal bottle caps requires precise stamping processes, which greatly raises the threshold for counterfeiting. With the application of aluminum caps, the capacity of Moutai has also been officially unified to 500ml (previously it was mostly 540ml), marking that production management has entered a period of modern standardization.

Iron-Cap Moutai

In the daily identification of Chunxiang Wine Merchants, we subdivide iron-cap Moutai into the following stages with great collection potential:

  1. Local state-owned red film (1986-1987): This is an extremely rare transitional version that combines the early "local state-owned" signature with the early sealing process.
  2. Five Star Brand iron-cap (1987-1990): The "local state-owned" signature is removed from the main mark, and the cover has a distinct metallic texture. It is regarded as the originator of the iron-cap series.
  3. Red Film Five Stars (1991-1996): A red plastic capsule is added to the outside of the aluminum cover to form a double layer of protection and further improve the sealing performance.

iron-cap Moutai is known as "the best tasting old Moutai" due to its excellent sealing performance. Performing strongly in the auction market, for example, is a set of five-star brand iron-cap Moutai (6 bottles) produced in 1993, with an estimate range of 150,000 to 200,000 yuan (equivalent to approximately 165,000 to 220,000 Hong Kong dollars). As the market's awareness of the taste of aged wine increases, high-quality iron-cap Moutai will usher in a period of rapid stock consumption, indicating that its long-term value will continue to rise.

3. The game between original boxes and loose bottles: the market pricing logic of old Moutai

In the secondary market circulation of old Moutai, the packaging form often affects the price trend more than the liquor itself. For collectors who pursue professional buyback, it is crucial to understand the logic of the premium between “Original Case” and “Loose Bottles”.

Original box Moutai

The original box Moutai has long been regarded as a "first-class asset", and its premium logic mainly stems from the following points:

  • Authentication integrity and fidelity The outer-case code, sealing tape, packing slip and bottle code form a closed verification chain. For example, an appraiser may check whether the serrated cut at the end of the case-sealing tape is even; whether the digit 7 in the logistics code is a straight vertical stroke and the digit 1 has a flat base; and whether, under ultraviolet light, the central vertical stroke in the Chinese character pronounced zhou within Kweichow Moutai turns red. These details greatly reduce the risk of a bottle being opened, refilled and resealed.
  • Storage environment stability: The original carton is a miniature temperature-controlled and light-proof environment, which can effectively slow down the oxidation and fading of the label and the evaporation of the wine liquid, ensuring that the wine is in good quality.

Although between 2020 and 2021, the official "unboxing order" once caused a sharp decrease in the stock of original boxes and increased their scarcity, with the changes in the macroeconomic environment and the implementation of official price stabilization measures in 2024, the price difference between original boxes and loose bottles has narrowed significantly. The current market approval price is approximately RMB 2,200-2,250 (equivalent to approximately HKD 2,420-2,475). This trend implies that the market bubble is clearing, and Moutai is returning to its mixed positioning of high-quality consumer goods and long-term collectibles, providing a more robust realization and investment environment for real old wine collectors.

4. Chunxiang Wine Merchants sorting: "Three fatal injuries" that affect the buyback value of old Moutai

As a "famous wine with collectible value", the buyback value of aged Moutai is affected by extremely subtle physical conditions. Regardless of whether you have Sunflower or iron-cap, if you want to get the highest buyback quote for Chunxiang Wine Merchants, you must be wary of the following three "invisible killers":

1. Scientific measurement of fill level (liquid loss)

When old wine is stored for decades, natural evaporation is inevitable. In appraisal, "fill level" is the life and death line that determines value. The fill level of top quality products should be below the bottleneck and above the bottle shoulder. If the fill level drops below the shoulder of the bottle, the value may be reduced by 10%-20% for every centimeter lowered; if the wine is seriously lost (below the top edge of the label), the wine will usually be rejected by professional institutions due to deterioration of the wine's quality. Expert advice: Do not turn the wine upside down when storing, to prevent the alcohol from contacting the inner seal of the bottle cap for a long time and accelerating evaporation. It should be stored in a small temperature difference, dark and ventilated environment.

2. Integrity of the capsule

The capsule is the "hymen" of Moutai old wine. For iron-cap Moutai, if the capsule outside the aluminum cover has cracks, signs of manual prying, or is loose, it will be regarded as "suspected top wine" and its value will plummet instantly. If you can smell a strong sauce aroma without opening the bottle, it usually means that the seal has failed. Expert taboos: Collectors should not use tape to wrap the original capsule twice. The chemical components in the glue will corrode the capsule and cause irreversible damage to the quality.

3. Threshold of alcohol concentration

The professional buyback market mainly targets 53% vol The classic sauce flavor Moutai. 32% or 42% low-grade Moutai. Since its molecular structure is unstable during the aging process and lacks long-term collection value, most professional buyers (including our bank) mark it as "not accepted".

5. 2026 Old Moutai Investment and Realization Guide: Why is now a good time for professional buyback?

Facing the current macroeconomic and deep adjustment period of the baijiu industry, many collectors are concerned about whether now is the evaluable window for selling old Moutai.

From the perspective of the top consumer goods market, despite macroeconomic pressure, top purchasing power still has strong consumption resilience. Just like Hermès, the top international luxury brand, has grown against the trend in the Asia-Pacific region, the old Moutai, with its extremely high cultural premium and scarcity, is still "hard currency against inflation."

More importantly, in the "Market-based Operation Plan" expected to be fully implemented in 2026, Moutai officials clearly proposed to eliminate channel bubbles through a dynamic price mechanism and standardize the old wine consignment model. This means that the government may intervene in the identification and circulation of the secondary old wine market, which will greatly improve the liquidity and market transparency of old wines from the 1970s to the 1990s. When the market returns to rationality, the classic aged Moutai with excellent quality and good appearance will see a significant increase in its real value.

Under such a general trend, taking advantage of the rising market value of old wine, it is undoubtedly the wisest asset optimization strategy to hand over the old Moutai that is idle at home and at risk of preservation to professional institutions for liquidation.
