Extra Cognac Knowledge Guide

Extra level positioning and scarcity

"Extra" is not the official classification term of the BNIC Cognac trade association, but an independent name adopted by major Cognac houses for their high-end aging product lines. Generally speaking, the Extra series is positioned between XO and Hors d'ge/high-end series (such as Louis XIII, Paradis). The base wine is aged for more than 30 years on average. The production is very small, and each batch is individually numbered. Extra series bottles are mostly made of unique glass craftsmanship, and their collection properties are much stronger than their drinking properties.

Valuation highlights on this page

  • Extra is usually positioned above XO, but Extra versions vary widely between brands.
  • High-vintage Cognac depends on the serial number, certificate, box, bottle stopper and fill level, and cannot be estimated solely by the grade name.
  • Can be compared with high-end pages such as Louis XIII, Paradis, Martell Extra, etc.

Extend the valuation route

If you have more than one bottle of wine, you can first group it by brand, level or year, and then use the following series pages to compare similar prices:

Extra's relationship with XO / Hors d'ge

level Positioning typical aging market liquidity
XO High-level regular lines 15–30 years common
Extra High-end limited line 30–50 years A small amount
Hors d' ge / XXO vintage selection 40–60 years limited edition
Peak Series (Louis XIII / Paradis Impérial / Black Pearl) Top collection level 50+ years Very rare

Extra series bottle craftsmanship

Extra-level bottles are mostly made of crystal or special glass technology, such as Hennessy Extra’s matte frosted round bottle, Martell Extra’s blue Neptune Poseidon bottle, Rémy Martin 1818’s golden vintage bottle, Napoleon L’Esprit’s Lalique crystal bottle, etc. The bottle itself has collectible value and is extremely difficult to imitate.

Major Brands Extra Series Comparison

Brand Bottle craftsmanship Logo features
Hennessy Extra Matte frosted round bottle First launched in 1870, red and gold color, matte surface with delicate feel
Martell Extra Blue Neptune Poseidon Handle Bottle Bottle handle design, dark sapphire blue glass
Napoleon Courvoisier Extra (L'Esprit) Lalique crystal bottle Crystal art bottle, each bottle is individually numbered
Rémy Martin 1818 Golden vintage bottle Commemorating the turning point of the brand in 1818, limited number
Camus Camus Extra crystal gourd bottle Borderies Single Origin Premium Aged Wine
Hardy / Hine / Frapin Extra Boutique winery version The production is extremely small, and it is not even circulated by individual collectors and auction houses.

Extra series collection suggestions

  • The integrity of the bottle is the first priority: The Extra series bottles have unique craftsmanship, and slight bumps or wear will directly affect the valuation by 15–25%. It is recommended to store it in a separate buffer box.
  • Number + certificate + wooden box three-piece set: High-end Extra comes with a Cellar Master signed certificate, original wooden box, and velvet lining. Any missing item is worth 10–20%.
  • Store upright in a cool place: Due to the special bottle body of the Extra series, it is recommended to place it upright in a cool place at 15–18°C to avoid long-term pressure on the bottle handle/carving.
  • Market circulation logic: The Extra series is mostly sold in the Asia-Pacific region through duty-free shop quotas or specialty store subscriptions. The second-hand market circulation is low and the buyback value is stable.

Extra valuation advice

Each transaction in the Extra series is subject to market conditions. Chunxiang Wine Merchants adopts a confidential process of "video appraisal + door-to-door interview + two-stage cash settlement" for the Extra level. It is recommended to make a WhatsApp video call first and have the appraiser remotely guide you to take photos of key features before arranging a visit.

FAQ

How does How do Extra series and XO differ?

Extra is a high-end limited product line of each brand, positioned higher than XO, and the base wine is usually aged for more than 30 years. The bottle has a unique design (matte, Neptune, Lalique crystal, etc.) and the market scarcity is much higher than XO.

Which brand Extra is most likely to appreciate in value?

Hennessy Extra (matte round bottle), Martell Extra (blue Poseidon), and Napoleon L'Esprit (Lalique crystal) have the most stable appreciation records. The complete wooden box with the certificate is the key to the premium price.

Extra value points after opening?

The Extra level is a collection level rather than a tasting level, and will depreciate significantly (generally more than 50%) once it is opened. It is recommended to keep it unopened.

Can the Extra be sold without the original wooden box?

Yes, but the buyback value is about 65–75%, complete with boxes. If there are some accessories such as certificates and flannel bags, they can be partially filled.

Is it difficult to identify the Extra series?

High. The Extra bottle has unique craftsmanship, small production volume and many versions. It is recommended to submit it to an appraiser who is familiar with the version (such as Chunxiang Wine Merchants) for visual/face-to-face evaluation. It is not recommended to evaluate or try to clean it by yourself.
