Courvoisier was founded in Paris in 1809 by Emmanuel Courvoisier as a wine merchant. In 1843, it moved to Jarnac (east of Cognac town) and officially began producing Cognac. The brand's unique history stems from the fact that in 1811, the "Comet vintage" eau-de-vie was designated by Emperor Napoleon for his relatives. In 1869, it was again awarded the "Royal Warrant" honor by Napoleon III, hence earning it the title "The Brandy of Napoleon." The brand's logo features a silhouette of Napoleon.
Courvoisier uses eaux-de-vie from four major growing regions: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois, with particular emphasis on the floral notes of Borderies. The group is currently owned by Beam Suntory.
