Among the treasures of traditional Chinese medicine, there is a mysterious medicated wine known as the "No. 1 Miraculous Wine under Heaven," which is Beijing Tongrentang Tiger Bone Wine. For hundreds of years, tiger bone wine has been regarded as a rare treasure in Chinese medicine due to its unique medicinal value and irreplaceable formula.

The value of Tiger Bone Wine lies not only in its medicinal efficacy but also in its rarity. As time went on, the collection of rare medicinal ingredients like tiger bone became increasingly difficult. Coupled with increasingly strict wildlife protection regulations, the supply of raw materials like tiger bone sharply declined, making the production of tiger bone wine more and more challenging, and its value became even more prominent.

Tiger bone wine was exclusively formulated and produced by Tongrentang, enjoying a reputation for over two hundred years. Beijing Tongrentang Tiger Bone Wine won an award at the "Leipzig" International Exposition in 1924. In 1993, China signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Appendix I of this convention explicitly listed rhinos and tigers as internationally protected endangered wild animals. On May 29 of the same year, the State Council issued the "Notice on Prohibiting Trade in Rhino Horn and Tiger Bone," reiterating the prohibition of all trade activities involving rhino horn and tiger bone. Article 3 of this notice stipulated: "The medicinal standards for rhino horn and tiger bone are revoked, and rhino horn and tiger bone shall no longer be used for medicinal purposes." In the same year, the "Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China" also removed "tiger bone." Consequently, tiger bone wine ceased production nationwide. Tongrentang then replaced tiger bone with leopard bone, changing the name of tiger bone wine to "Hugujiu (Bone Protection Wine)." Later, "Hugujiu" became "Zhuanggu Wine" (Bone Strengthening Wine), which remains one of Tongrentang's top ten flagship medicines today. Currently, all genuine Tongrentang Tiger Bone Wine that we encounter and collect are remnants from the private sector of that era.
